 Tattoo Procedure

The process of getting a tattoo is four steps: the set up, pre-tattoo preparation, the actual tattooing, and the post tattooing clean up.

1.  Setting Up:

  • The tattoo artist will gather needed supplies.
  • Areas of tattooing are marked and covered with plastic.
  • Sanatize anything that may be dirty, like hands or chair you will be sitting in.

2.  Pre-tattoo preparations:

  • Shave any body hair that may be located where the tattoo is wanted.
  • Rubbing alchohol will be put on the area of the tattoo to disinfect and remove any bacteria.
  • A special pen or stencil will be used to mark on the body a guidline for the artist.

3.  The tattoo process:

  • Tattoo artists must have a sterile field all around them at all times.  A sterile field is a small sterilized area where everything the tattoo artist will need is kept.  This may include rubbing alcohol, any reusable equipment, alcohol/iodine pads, etc.  If the tatto artist moves out of this sterile field they must put on new sterilized gloves to keep the skin being tattooed from becoming infected.  If the artist does not do this your health is at risk.
  • The first step of the tattoo process is to outline that tattoo with the needle.  This is generally the most painful part of the tatto because your skin has yet to get used to the needle bobbing in to your skin.  After the guidelines are made on the skin the tattoo artist must clean the skin again before adding color.
  • After guidelines are set up for the artist, the artist will then fill in the tattoo.  This can include colored ink.  This part of the tattoo process may hurt much less than the outline portion because your skin is used to it.

4. The aftermath:

  • Once a tattoo is completed it must be bandanged to prevent infection or ink from spreading.
  • The clean up process absolutly requires the destruction of the needle used as not to spread any from of disease or infection.

Hygiene and Safety Guidelines

Before the tattoo:

  1. Be immunized for hepatitis and tetanus before you get a tattoo.  This stops some of the risk of infection that could be caused by unsterile equipment.
  2. Find out if you are allergic to any ingredients found in the inks being used in the tattoo.
  3. Notify the tattoo artist if you are allergic to latex to keep them from using latex gloves and instead using a different kind of glove.

After the tattoo:

  1. Keep the tattoo bandaged for at least a day.
  2. Wash the tattooed area with microbial soap.  Do not use alcohol to clean the tattooed area because this will dry out the skin.
  3. Do not expose the tattoo to pool water or hot bath water during the healing process.
  4. Always apply sunscreen to the tattooed area when    outside.
  5. Monitor the skin around the tattoo very closely.  Watch for signs of infection, such as, pus, swelling or redness.
  6. Keep the skin moist with antibacterial creams.
